SIMC Celebrates 'Clairvoyance' - 13/08/2010
SIMC witnessed the grand finale of an event which had kept the college buzzing with activity for the past week. This event, named Clairvoyance, a word, by now well ingrained in every SIMC student’s dictionary, was a week long guest lecture marathon, which attempted to bridge the gap between classroom teaching and on-field experience. It enabled the students to interact with people from the industry. The event marked a break-away from the daily academic routine. For second year students, who have now branched into their respective specialisations, it also provided some refreshing  change, as they were given the liberty to attend lectures of guests from any field of communication.   This grand event was the result of days and nights of hard work by a team of around 30 students, and was planned and managed entirely by them. The core event team comprised of Nalin Agarwal, Noopur Bapna and Arunima Dey, from batch 2009-2011.To bring the event to a close, the college had invited 3 distinguished professionals for an interaction with the seniors as and juniors.  Addressing the students first was Sumit Awasthi, Political Editor and Anchor, Aaj Tak. “This is Sumit Awasthi, live and exclusive for you, from your college, Seedhi Baat”. With these words, he began his interaction with the audience, wherein he spoke about the ills plaguing the media industry. Identifying the vices of the television industry as sensationalism, distortion of facts and paid news, he told the audience how, in his opinion, the media was misusing its power as the fourth estate. The next speaker was Paritosh Joshi, CEO, Star CJ Network India Ltd. In a presentation titled ‘The New Egalitarian-rise and rise of the vocal consumer,’ he spoke about how dissemination of information has evolved over the years. “We media professionals push the communication agenda” he said. He explained how social media has helped in democratising communication, with the emergence of multiple sources of information. The highlight of the event, undoubtedly, was Nana Patekar’s. The renowned Bollywood actor, who has over the years, gained much respect in the industry and among viewers, enthralled all with his simplicity, honesty and sense of humour. With no frill and no pretentions, he shared his journey in the industry, leaving the students with some advice. “With Rajneeti, I realised that I have some capacity as an actor.” He told the students the importance of self-reflection and self-discovery, managing to keep the audience humoured all the same. The event was brought to an end with a vote of thanks by Dr. Vidya Yervedekar....  more>

Alumni Speak - Then & Now - 26/07/2009
Building relations with the Alumni was always seen as an integral activity asthe industry was dominated with ex-SIMCians. While Alumni meets were held forthe first time in 2006, the concept of a dedicated cell (Alumni Relations Cell– ARC) as an organizational body was initiated in 2007. The Alumni RelationsCell initiate, plan & organize activities that maintain relationship withthe alumni on a continuous level and build a platform to collaborate, share& enhance value.‘The batch of 2008 saw the formation of the AlumniRelations Cell, working as an organizational body. We were also the first onesto introduce the concept of an alumni newsletter. Our batch also had the creditof adding the business element to Alumni relations, from creating & editingarticles from a target consumer’s viewpoint, planning alumni events &interactions, etc. We also introduced the concept of Alumni Wall of Fame, whichwould allow people to put up their messages & wishes. No other school isknown to give an opportunity to set up a real time long term operation,’says Abhishek Bajaj, President, ARC 2008 'A major chunk of the media industry consists ofSIMCians. So it is simply impossible to ignore them.  The concept oforganizing alumni meets initiated with our batch – the first day would host aparty for all alumni and the next day would be interaction with the juniors. Wewere also the batch that revived FOC (Festival of communication) after aninterval and also had a Kailash Kher concert; this set a benchmark for future FOCorganisers.  This was possible only with the support built with thealumni. It’s great that what started out as an alumni meet now operatesas  a full-fledged organizational body with city centric meets bringing ingreater scope for networking. The purpose of an alumni meet is not justbusiness, it also encourages people to interact & make friends.’Saurabh Bhawal ARC President, Batch 2007'The Alumni is one of the greatest strengths of theinstitute, they are the flag bearers of the college. SIMC has built a goodalumni network over the past 18 years, and have provided opportunities to thecurrent students through engaging us in projects and also providing academicsupport by coming as guest lecturers. We envision building an Alumni forumcomprising of members within the college cell & representatives from thealumni network who would collaborate & network on a consistent, continuouslevel.'Nikhil Kurian, ARC President Batch 2010...  more>
